Cup Saucy’s

Homage to Meret Oppenheim.

Prior to a two-month residency at Medalta, I exhausted my immediate ideas with homage to Meret Oppenheim’s infamous fur teacup saucers with Flocking Cup Saucys. One of the important aspects of making for me is identifying with what I am drawn to and keeping it approachable. This series of cup saucys, which are renditions of my earliest cup saucer pieces from Japan, developed after I had won the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics. Essentially, I was trying to exhaust myself before heading out to a two-month residency at Medicine Hat, Alberta’s International Residency program at Medalta. The result was an engagement with not only my personal history as a maker but of one within the greater context of the history of craft and sculpture. Meret Oppenheim’s trussed stilettos and fur teacup saucer spoon forms remain key to my understanding of walking the edge. Nylon fiber became my new surface treatment. Several hundred pounds of coloured flock later, I began growing my flocking cup saucy collection. Yes, I wear a protective mask.
